Reclaim Your Music: Let Go of Limiting Beliefs

How to Set Yourself Free from Limiting Beliefs in Music

Limiting Beliefs Are Killing Your Musical Dreams—Here’s How to Break Through Them and Get Your Freedom

Are your musical dreams feeling out of reach? If phrases like

I don’t have enough time to practice," or "I’m too old to start now," sound familiar, you're wrestling with limiting beliefs.
These aren't truths; they’re fears masquerading as facts, building invisible walls between you and your potential. Ready to knock them down?

 Let’s dive in.

The Day My Musical Dream Was Shut Down

I know the weight of those beliefs all too well.

Fresh out of a  7-year classical music school, I was excited —to become a professional musician and apply to music college.
As I took my plans to a teacher I deeply admired, I anticipated encouragement. Instead, her words sent my dreams crashing:

"You’re not going to make it!"

At that moment, my excitement turned into doubt and fear. The belief that "I’m not good enough" rooted itself deeply within me. Despite this, I pushed forward, auditioned, and was accepted into a top music college, even a prestigious conservatory. On paper, I thrived, but inside, I carried the damaging belief, "I’m not a real musician."

What Are Limiting Beliefs musicians struggle with?

Limiting beliefs are deeply ingrained narratives that place ceilings over our potential. They’re born from emotionally vulnerable experiences and are felt as absolute truths. But here's the twist—they don’t protect us; they paralyze us.

Common Limiting Beliefs Musicians Carry

1. "I’m not talented enough."
- Formed when: You're compared to someone "better" or praised less than others by a family member or teacher.

2. "I’ll never catch up—I started too late."
- Formed when: Embarking on a musical journey later in life surrounded by seemingly younger, more skilled peers.

3. "I’m not good enough to perform."
- Formed when: A public mishap, followed by ridicule or harsh criticism, makes you doubt your abilities.

4. "I don’t have a ‘real’ voice."
- Formed when: Comments, even jokingly, from peers or family about your singing ability lodge themselves in your mind.

How to Reclaim Your Truth and Get Your Confidence Back for musicians

Years later, I tackled my limiting belief through a self-development course. It was transformative. By learning to identify and challenge those lingering doubts, I started rewriting my story.

Ready to Break Through? Here's How to Start:

1. Identify Your Limiting Beliefs
Pinpoint the exact thoughts and stories that have been holding you back—no matter how small or silly they may seem.

2. Challenge Them

Ask yourself:

  • “Is this really true?”

  • “Who told me this—and why did I believe it?”
    Start separating fear from fact.
3. Reframe Them
Take those old, fear-driven narratives and turn them into powerful, supportive beliefs.

✨ Example: “I’ll embarrass myself if I sing and play” becomes “I’m learning to sing and play—and that takes courage.”

4. Seek Support
You don’t have to do this alone. Talk to a coach, teacher, or trusted musician who can support and encourage your growth.
