Originally composed for violin and piano by Fritz Kreisler, Liebesleid became one of the most beloved encore pieces of the early twentieth century. Years later, Sergei Rachmaninoff transformed it into an extraordinary solo piano transcription, enriching the music with expressive inner voices, lush chromatic harmonies, beautiful rubato, and a remarkable variety of articulation. His version is both technically demanding and emotionally profound.
Rather than simply removing notes, I wanted to preserve what makes Rachmaninoff's version so captivating.
My goal became:
- Simplify the technical difficulty
- Preserve the expressive melody
- Retain many of the beautiful inner voices
- Keep the rich harmonic colors
- Maintain the lyrical Romantic character
- Make the piece enjoyable for intermediate pianists
I also shortened the arrangement and created a rewarding performance piece while keeping the learning process manageable.
